How to fix "Safari can't open the page because the server cannot be found" error on iPhone

The Safari browser on an iPhone (or any other Apple device) can frequently show the error "Safari can't open the page because the server cannot be found" while browsing some sites and nothing seems to work in resolving the issue other than restarting the device or waiting hopelessly. This error occurs because of the rather proprietary way in which Apple devices handle web requests. The local server is unable to resolve the domain name or match the domain name to its relevant IP address thus throwing up the aforementioned error. To be able to resolve the error, you need to either use OpenDNS, Google DNS or a variety of other DNS services available on the Internet. You can see through the steps below to know where to change DNS settings.

These screenshots have been taken on an iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.3.

Here are the steps.

Go to the iPhone home screen.

Click Settings.

Wi-Fi settings are displayed. Click the small 'i' at the extreme right of the Wi-Fi network you are connected to (For example, airtel.)

The settings for your network are displayed. You will notice that in front of DNS, a value like 192.168.1.1 or anything else is specified. This is the DNS server that we need to change. Change that value to either 208.67.222.222 or 208.67.220.220 for OpenDNS and either 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 for Google DNS. You can find other DNS servers on the Internet and try them as well in case these do not work. In most cases though, OpenDNS works fine. After entering the new DNS value, click the Back button on top.

On the Wi-Fi page, slide the toggle to restart Wi-Fi.

Once the Wi-Fi restarts, your Wi-Fi network starts appearing again and changes have taken effect.

Go back to Safari and try browsing the same websites that were giving the error earlier. You will find that you are now able to browse those websites successfully.

  21. Does not work and is that due to the fact that this is happening after I had a new ISP account though same ISP - switched over to roommate to save on monthly fees. I also reset back to factory settings and still doesn't work. Do I need to go into my CISCO Router and make changes? My wifi on my Windows laptop work but wifi on iPad not working. Wifi on my Android smartphones are working.

  22. Hello Anant, I have tried your solution to "Safari can't open the page because the server cannot be found" error on my i-Pad but it has not worked. Is that because it is an iPad not and i-phone?

    1. No Helen, no difference between iPad and iPhone in that regard. What I'll suggest you is to try more DNS servers after searching from Google, one or the other may work.

  36. Hi, it didn't work for me. But I figured out a simple alternative to try, which is to forget the Wi-Fi network and re-join it. Though it seems that it resets the DNS number, it might have done other stuff as well.
