How to fix "Safari can't open the page because the server cannot be found" error on Mac OS X






There may be times when you frequently encounter the error "Safari can't open the page because the server cannot be found" on your Mac OS X while doing normal day-to-day browsing. This error occurs because of the seemingly proprietary way in which Apple devices handle web requests. The local DNS server is unable to resolve the domain name or match the domain name to its equivalent IP address thus throwing up the above error. To resolve the error, you need to either use OpenDNS, Google DNS or choose from a variety of other DNS services available on the Internet. You can see through the steps below to know where to change DNS settings on Mac OS X.

These screenshots have been taken on a MacBook Air running Mac OS X Yosemite.

Here are the steps.

Go to the Mac System Preferences.

Click Network in the third pane.

Network settings are displayed. Click Advanced.

Advanced Network settings are displayed. Click DNS tab on the top.

DNS Settings are displayed. Click '+' in the bottom left to add a DNS address.

Enter the value 208.67.222.222 under DNS Servers in the left box. This is an OpenDNS IP address. After entering this value, click the '+' sign again to add another OpenDNS IP address.

Enter the value 208.67.220.220 as the 2nd DNS Server. You can also use Google DNS IP addresses (8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4) instead of OpenDNS. Click OK.

Main Network settings are displayed again. Click Turn Wi-Fi Off button on top right.

A warning message is received. Click Apply.

The Wi-Fi gets turned off. Click Turn Wi-Fi On button on the top right to switch it on again.

Once Wi-Fi restarts, the button will start showing Turn Wi-Fi Off.

Go back to Safari and try browsing the same websites that were giving the error earlier. You will find that you are now able to browse those websites successfully.
