Though its a personal preference whether someone wants new links to open in a new tab or in background, thankfully iOS 8 settings has this covered. iOS 8 provides a setting which can be set to open new Safari links in background or in new foreground tab as per your wish. Today we will see the steps required to open new Safari links in the background on an iPhone running iOS 8.

These screenshots have been taken on an iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.4 and they will remain the same for all other iPhone variants. Here are the steps.

Go to the iPhone home screen and locate Settings app.

Click Settings app.

iPhone settings are displayed. Scroll down the page till you see Safari.

Click Safari.

Safari settings are displayed. Click Open Links under General.

Open Links settings are displayed. As you can see, the tick mark is in front of 'In New Tab'. Click 'In Background'.

The tick mark is now in front of 'In Background'. Click Safari on top left to take you to the previous page.

As you can see, Open Links now shows 'In Background'. Now go to Safari browser, open some website and long press a link.

A menu pops up in which the second button says 'Open in Background'. On clicking this button, the new link opens in the background and does not take you away from the current page that you are navigating.
