Unboxing and Contents

The laptop comes in a large cardboard box. There is no cushioning for the laptop otherwise. Inside the box, you will find the laptop,  a rather huge adapter and a charging cable.

Design and Build Quality

As soon as we hold the device, we notice its a heavy laptop thereby curbing its portability. The heavy weight of the machine would mean you would be better off keeping it on your table rather than lugging it around. The laptop is black in color with hints of maroon red colored pattern on the glossy top surface. Asus logo is embedded on the top surface too. The bottom plate is again black plastic. The top of the laptop seems to be a dust magnet and needs to be cleaned every now and then.

As we open the laptop, we find embellishment of maroon red color spread across the keyboard and the touchpad. We won't call the design as well as the build quality premium and we feel they could have been slightly better.

Display

The display on Asus R510J is fairly bright. The screen is not reflective at all and has a sort of matte finish which is extremely easy on the eyes. Glossy displays tend to be more reflective as well as slightly harsh on the eyes. But the disadvantage of using a matte screen is that the colors seem to lose their shine and look a bit washed away, specially for the primary colors. One advantage of having a matte display though is that the viewing angles remain deep due to lack of reflection. We would call this display an above average one because we can have a look at it whole day without feeling any strain on our eyes.

Keyboard and Trackpad

The laptop has square keys along with a smaller than normal numeric keypad on the right end. The keys have a nice travel but a plasticky feedback. We like the throw of the keys but the sound made by the keys is muffled which takes away some of the experience of typing. And then there is one huge problem. The keys are marked in red color, which does not stand out from the black background of the keys themselves due to low contrast. This means that people who look at the keyboard while typing, including us, have a difficult time finding the required key again and again taking away the pleasure of fast typing. And then the keyboard is not backlit either. Reading the markings on Function keys is another huge pain point.

There is a large sized trackpad below the keyboard. The trackpad is overly responsive and the mouse pointer was moving around the screen even when we didn't have a finger placed on the trackpad. And another problem we faced was that whenever we clicked the trackpad to hold on to a window, the mouse pointer seems to jump from the place. These are tiny nuisances in appearance but apparently can cause a number of problems for a daily user.

Camera, Multimedia and Connectivity

The laptop has an inbuilt VGA webcam which you might feel can help you with some video chatting but the quality of the video is miserable. The webcam video has immense noise and seems like it clicks pictures after every few seconds rather than taking a video. The laptop also has 1 TB hard disk which should be enough for most users, even for those who stack up large number of video files and games on their machines. However, there are no integrated SSD's which can dampen the performance a little bit. The sound that the speakers produce is impressive to say the least. The loudness and clarity means a highly immersive experience while watching movies or playing games. The laptop is equipped with all the connectivity features as well like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a VGA port and an HDMI port. Moreover, it houses three USB ports out of which two are USB 3 and one is a USB 2. An SD card reader at the bottom of the laptop also adds to its functionality a fair bit. The optical drive is sort of becoming obsolete with time though with everything being available online.

Operating System and Software

Asus R510J features Windows 10 Home out of the box. The best part about Windows 10 is that you are presented with a desktop rather than the Metro UI tiles on reboot. Along with the usual software that is shipped with Windows 10, Asus has added a few software from its side as well. We did not spend much time on these software since we feel most users rarely use the applications provided by a vendor no matter how good they may be. Otherwise, the laptop provides the normal goodies of Windows 10 along with Cortana.

Performance

Asus R510J is an entry level gaming laptop. Provision of 8 GB RAM as well as an Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M GPU with 2 GB video memory means it has the ability to run games at a fair resolution. However, you cannot play recent graphic intensive games at full settings and would have to turn off a few effects to have a fair experience. Other than gaming, this laptop scorches through most of the tasks and you won't have any issues in day to day usage. Asus has optimised the system for Windows 10 usage quite well. And as we talked above, the speakers are of very good quality thus making this laptop a great media consumption device as well.

Battery

To check for battery time, we charged the laptop to 100% and then started using it in moderate use cases. We used it a bit for for normal day to day browsing, watching a few videos on Youtube and using a few other software. The laptop battery dried up on us a little before 4 hours. With heavy gaming or aggressive usage of photo or video editors, this mark would probably go down to 3 hours. However, since this is a heavy laptop, and as we pointed out earlier, is not as portable, the paradox states that having a lower battery life should not be a huge bummer since it would stay on your table and you can hook up the battery whenever you wish.

Bottomline and Verdict

Asus R510J has a good set of specifications. Additionally, it is a fast machine with decent build quality. It does run games well at medium resolution. However, it has its fair set of flaws too, the most noticeable of them being a lack of backlit keyboard or readable keys. And then, it has a completely non-usable webcam too. So should you invest in this laptop? Well, we would say that you might like this laptop if you keep your expectations slightly grounded. If you look at the keyboard while typing, this is a deal breaker and the keyboard on this laptop won't serve your purpose. And then, no one should go for this laptop if they wish to use it mainly for video chatting. But other than that, the entire package is a few notches above average.
