Rifle Emoji not supported by tech giants Apple and Microsoft
The rifle emoji has been in news recently due to its sensitive nature. Unicode Consortium has decided to omit the rifle emoji from those it plans to reveal for Rio Olympics. The reason, though not mentioned anywhere, seems to be Apple's and Microsoft's lack of support for the emoji as per their position on gun control laws. There are 12 voting members at Unicode which include Apple, Microsoft, Google, Oracle, Facebook, IBM and Yahoo. As per the decision, the emoji won't form the part of any emoji keyboard anywhere.
A gun control group Infer Trust earlier raised their voice when Unicode released a set of 67 emojis. According to Infer Trust, the inclusion of rifle emoji would be an offensive move and popularise the image of a harmful weapon.
There seems to be a debate that has arisen regarding whether gun control laws should be made more stringent rather than actions like banning gun emojis. However, as per the latest details, the emojis released for Rio Olympics won't include the rifle emoji.
