Design and Build Quality

OnePlus 3 comes across as an amazingly good looking device with an all metal design. The first thing that will strike you after holding is the thinness of the device, at times it does feel like you are holding a ruler and not a smartphone. The thin black bezel on both the sides makes the user feel that the display is floating on the glass and this makes for a very immersive experience. There are no doubts in our mind to say that this is a premium designed and strikingly attractive device.

The front of the device has half inch bezels on top and bottom. The top houses the LED light, the camera lens, proximity sensor and the speaker grille. The bottom has two soft keys which you can configure for using as Recents and Back as per your requirement from the Settings app. However, we don't like this idea as it confuses us many times finding the correct key. The Home button at the bottom center is a touch capacitive fingerprint sensor button.

Taking a look at the edges, the top edge has nothing, the left edge has a slider to silence the phone and the volume rocker, the bottom edge has a speaker, the USB Type-C port and a microphone hole while the right edge has the Power button as well as the SIM tray. The buttons are too recessed into the chassis and do not travel much thereby with a lessened feedback as well.

The metal back of the device has antenna lines running across the top and bottom, the camera sensor, LED flash and OnePlus branding. The camera lens protrudes out of the chassis and that causes the phone to wobble if used after placing on a flat surface. However, its extremely rare that someone would use a smartphone that way.

The back cover is not removable. There is a sticker placed at the back to show how to insert SIM cards but you'll need to peel that off before actually using your phone.

We just love the design of this phone and even with the 5.5 inch screen, it does not seem that huge. Its a high quality design without an iota of doubt.

The display on OnePlus 3 is natural and bright. The display seems to float on the glass which adds to the pleasure of using the phone. There is absolutely no pixellation whatsoever. Screen reflection has been controlled well too. We thoroughly enjoyed watching Youtube videos on this phone as it portrays real life colors. Viewing angles are pretty deep and the display has moderate usability under direct sunlight.

Operating System and Software

OnePlus 3 comes equipped with Android Marshmallow 6.0 wrapped under Oxygen OS 3.1. The user interface has a very clean and minimalistic design, close to stock Android experience. Basic uniformity has been maintained across all the screens and layouts in terms of fonts, icons and colors. This makes the user feel like using a unified system instead of dealing with a variety of operating systems on a single phone. There are a number of gestures available like double tap to wake, opening camera by drawing an 'O' on the screen, drawing 'V' to toggle the flashlight and drawing '||' with two separate fingers to control music. Customisation of LED notification light colors as well as a dark mode are available too. There is absolutely no bloatware on the system. Only the most useful Google apps are present along with the basic phone utilities. We like this operating system very much for the simplicity it maintains.

The camera app is basic and simple too. You can set a variety of settings like exposure, white balance, ISO etc. which many professional photographers would definitely like. Let us have a look at these 3 rear camera pictures at default settings to see how they turn up.

The camera quality of OnePlus 3 is astonishing. The colors are realistic and the pictures are not over processed. But the best part about OnePlus 3 camera is the amount of detail it captures even in low light conditions like the second image above. Even in the third picture above, the water droplets have come across as being absolutely real and the green color of the leaves has been maintained very nicely. Touch to refocus works very fast and there is not much noise in low light pictures. This is one of the best smartphone cameras that we have come across till date and matches the likes of flagships from LG, Samsung and Apple. The front camera images are naturally reproduced as well along with ample detailing.

OnePlus 3 is powered by Snapdragon 820 processor with a whopping 6 GB RAM. This is an ultrafast smartphone. The phone will never slow down or bog down no matter how many apps you have opened in the background. You can juggle between apps in and out as much you want so multitasking is a cinch. The phone handles all games extremely well too. Overheating is not an issue with this phone. The smartphone also has a loud and clear loudspeaker which means you can enjoy games and videos even without earphones. Call quality is very good as well.

Fingerprint sensor

OnePlus 3 has one of the fastest fingerprint sensors found on any smartphone. It is stupendously fast and you won't even realise when you have entered the home screen. And extra brownie points from us to OnePlus for keeping the sensor at the front rather than placing it at the back like many other phones.

OnePlus 3 sports a non-removable 3000 mAh battery. We charged the battery to 100% and then started using the phone. We did a bit of net surfing, downloaded and installed a few apps and games, did some calling and Whatsapp messaging, played a few games, watched videos on Youtube and threw in some amount of standby time too. The battery died on us after 15 hours which is great battery life. The device would be able to carry you through full day's medium to heavy usage without the need to recharge the battery again. Moreover, the battery supports Dash Charge, which charges it from 0 to 60% in 30 minutes time.

4.5 stars out of 5

Bottomline and Verdict

OnePlus 3 comes across as an incredible device in almost all the aspects that we could have tested it on. Ultrafast performance, great battery life, a great display and an equally fast fingerprint sensor make sure that you are not able to find any flaws with this phone. OnePlus 3 is arguably the best Android smartphone of the year and holds its position as the numero uno phone at its price point. The only phone that can break a few of its sales at its price point is Le Max 2, which sports the wonderful CDLA digital audio technology. Other than that, if you have the pockets to pay for OnePlus 3, it is highly recommended from our end.
