Samsung has showcased two new smartwatches on Wednesday at IFA 2016 in Berlin. These smartwatches claim up to 4 days battery life and would directly compete with current market leading Apple Watch. The second generation Apple Watch or Apple Watch 2 as it is being called, which will possibly be unveiled in a week's time on September 7th would probably have a 36% larger battery life than its predecessor. Samsung's slew of new watches should liven up the wearable market a good deal. These new watches are named Gear S3 Frontier and Gear S3 Classic.
Gear S3 Frontier has a rugged appearance. It sports a cellular radio chip which helps it be like a standalone smartwatch not needing to be connected to any smartphone to work properly. You can basically use it like a smartphone itself. It features an always-on color display. Like its siblings, it is dust and water resistant but it also has an inbuilt GPS chip and a speaker too. You can use the watch to transact using Samsung Pay, very similar to the way you can now use an Apple Watch to pay through Apple Pay. Gear S3 Classic boasts of more premium designing but it carries similar features as that of S3 Frontier.

The pricing of these new smartwatches is still under wraps and they would be available at the end of the year, which of course is approaching fast. The battle of smartwatch supremacy is heating up. Samsung has overtaken Apple in the flagship smartphone arena this year with striking demand and sale of Galaxy S7, S7 Edge and Note 7 smartphones. However, as we mentioned above, Apple still leads the market by a fair margin when it comes to smartwatches.
What is interesting to note is that Samsung has a diversified portfolio of smartwatches while the Cupertino tech giant has only a single watch up till now. But this might change completely in a few days when Apple reveals Apple Watch 2. If Apple can improve on the shortcomings of the first generation watch, then Samsung is going to have a hard time catching up. The standout advantage Apple always has had over other brands through the years is that its an integrated ecosystem company engineering hardware, software and services all on its own end thereby churning out more reliable and optimised products one after another.
