OnePlus 5 launches in India amidst huge fanfare and anticipation

After months of speculations, rumors and leaks, OnePlus has finally launched its coveted OnePlus 5 in India to cement its position as a top level player in premium smartphone manufacturing. The company has logged in 3 years of hardwork to design and develop the new smartphone and the end results do show enough promise and poise. The launch event happened in Mumbai where a large number of journalists and bloggers as well as OnePlus fans had gathered to witness the historic event for the company.

OnePlus 5 has been launched in 2 variants in India. The Slate Gray version with 6 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage would sell for Rs. 32999 while the heavily specced Midnight Black version with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage would sell for Rs. 37999. The device would be available exclusively on Amazon.in. The OnePlus 5 directly competes with industry heavyweights like Apple iPhone 7 Plus, Samsung S8+ and Google Pixel and being the most inexpensive of these, ends up being a top notch choice for budget conscious yet premium smartphone seekers.

The phone stands merely 7.25 mm in thickness which makes it the thinnest OnePlus flagship ever. Designed with an aluminum unibody, the minimalism shines through each and every element of the phone. The tapered edges at the back induce striking sleekness and elegance to the device. New crescent shaped antenna bands merge seamlessly into the body while the rounded contours make the phone a pleasure to hold.

OnePlus 5 packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, the latest and the best in the lot. It supports 34 GSM networks making it a truly global phone even fulfilling the needs of the most frequent traveller.

For the first time, OnePlus has delved into the territory of dual cameras. The rear camera has dual lenses, the first one being a normal 16 Megapixel sensor while the second one is a 20 Megapixel sensor with a telephoto lens. This combination allows the hardware and software to work in tandem to produce some wonderful image quality through the implementation of Portrait Mode. This mode preempts both rear camera sensors to work together to blur out the background and keep the primary subject in pin sharp focus. Additionally the use of a telephoto lens also offers the ability to do optical zoom with better clarity. The front selfie camera has a resolution of 16 Megapixels with an aperture of f/2.0.

The battery capacity stands at 3300 mAh and though it might seem a little low on paper, yet with the use of Snapdragon 835 processor which is more energy efficient as well as through software optimisation, the company claims the battery on OnePlus 5 lasts up to 20 per cent longer than OnePlus 3T. And the company has definitely thrown in its hugely popular and strikingly fast charging solution, the Dash Charge into the mix. A half-hour charge gives enough juice to the device to stay up for a day.

OnePlus 5 runs on OxygenOS 4.5.1 layered over Android 7.1.1 Nougat. The experience seems close to stock Android but with the availability of additional features like a new reading mode, which uses the ambient light sensor and monochrome mapping to provide a more comfortable reading experience by adjusting screen temperature towards gray scales. There is a gaming do not disturb feature which does not disrupt you with notifications while you are busy catching Pokemons. Moreover, the app priority feature loads the most frequently used apps to load quickly by keeping them in some buffer.

OnePlus is organising Pop up stores across the cities of Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad on a first cum first serve basis where select users can experience the product first hand. OnePlus 5 goes on sale globally on June 27, 2017. And in India, you can lay hands on one on Amazon.in, oneplusstore.in and at OnePlus experience stores in Delhi and Bangalore. A number of offers are bundled in including an accidental insurance coverage, some partner benefits from Amazon Prime, Kindle and Vodafone as well as a cashback for SBI credit card and debit card users, the minute details of which can be accessed while buying the OnePlus 5.
