Asus launches world's first Tango and Daydream enabled smartphone called ZenFone AR in India

Taiwanese smartphone maker Asus has launched world’s first Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) enabled smartphone called ZenFone AR in India at a price of Rs. 49999. The phone would be available exclusively on Flipkart. The Tango-enabled and Daydream-ready smartphone was first exhibited at CES 2017 and now has made its way to the Indian shores. The phone has a metal frame along with 4.8 mm thickness at the edges. The leather patterned rear surface and stainless steel accents around the camera add a touch of luxury to the device.

As we delve deeper into the AR and VR features of the phone, lets look at the specifications alongside. ZenFone AR features a 5.7 inch WQHD Super AMOLED display for great AR and VR content. The phone packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor specialised in running real time applications of AR. The company has worked in tandem with Qualcomm Technologies and Google developers to create sophisticated hardware and software tools that provide breathtaking AR experiences. The GPU powering the system is Qualcomm Adreno 530 which further aids the CPU in AR and VR applications. The phone features 8 GB RAM coupled with 128 GB of UFS 2.0 based internal storage. The memory can be further expanded up to 2 TB through a microSD card. ZenFone AR houses a hybrid dual SIM tray.

In terms of cameras, the ZenFone AR utilises an Asus TriCam system comprising three rear cameras. These three cameras include a motion tracking camera, depth sensing camera and high resolution 23 Megapixel PixelMaster 3.0 camera, which work together to enable AR experiences. The motion tracking camera captures location in three dimensional space, the depth sensing camera determines distance from objects through IR lasers and the main PixelMaster camera uses a Sony IMX318 sensor to capture the environment. Further the main 23 Megapixel PixelMaster camera packs an array of high end features like four axis optical image stabilisation (OIS), three axis electronic image stabilisation (EIS), 0.03 second TriTech autofocus system, super resolution of 92 Megapixels, RAW file support, 4K video recording and professional manual mode for discrete control over camera settings like white balance, ISO, shutter speed etc. The front camera has a resolution of 8 Megapixels.

ZenFone AR runs on Android 7.0 Nougat and packs a 3300 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging technology that can enable 60% battery charge in only 45 minutes. For premium audio quality, the phone bundles HiRes Audio, DTS Headphone:X 7.1 virtual surround sound, NXP SmartAMP, 5 Magnet speakers and Asus SonicMaster 3.0 technology. The connectivity options available on the device include Dual band 802.11ac 2x2 MIMO Wi-Fi, Fingerprint sensor on front home key, Bluetooth v4.2, USB-C, 4G, GPS, AGPS and GLONASS. ZenFone AR would be available in black color.

Asus is offering some benefits to consumers who would be buying the phone from Flipkart's platform. A discount of Rs. 2500 would be available on Google Daydream View VR Headset if purchased alongside ZenFone AR. A no cost EMI offer up to 9 months is available and every Jio and ZenFone AR use will get up to 100 GB 4G data and complimentary Jio Prime membership. The AR and VR experiences of the phone would be the determining factor in terms of its sales. People who get convinced with these world first features would definitely find this device worth a try even though AR and VR based smartphones from other brands would also start popping up very soon.
